Free Touch Typing Practice for Beginners
Touch typing means using the keyboard without searching for every letter. It is a learnable skill, and you do not have to be fast on day one. Begin with relaxed hands, correct finger positions, and short sessions that reward accuracy.
Find the home row
Place your index fingers on F and J. These keys usually have small raised marks so you can find them by touch. Rest your left fingers near A, S, D and F, and your right fingers near J, K, L and the semicolon. Keep your thumbs near the space bar.
Start with short drills
Practice patterns such as f j f j and ff jj fj jf. Once your fingers can return comfortably to the home row, introduce neighboring keys. Move on to short words, sentences and paragraphs only when you can type the earlier patterns with few mistakes.
Build a useful daily routine
- Practice for five to ten minutes each day.
- Keep your shoulders relaxed and avoid pressing hard on the keys.
- Watch accuracy and mistakes instead of chasing a speed record immediately.
- Choose a consistent practice duration to measure improvement.
